Set in

The web edition of The Bilge & Tankage Quarterly is set in three typefaces. The display face is Bodoni Moda, a variable-axis contemporary didone by Owen Earl, distributed via Google Fonts since 2020. The body face is Albert Sans, a variable-weight humanist sans by Pangaia / Sigmund (2022), also via Google Fonts. The monospace face for chits, kickers, and page numbers is Departure Mono, a bitmap-grid mono by Helena Zhang (2024), distributed via the Departure Mono official site and via Fontsource.

The web edition's CSS is approximately 700 lines, hand-written, and shared across every page. It uses custom properties for the palette and the type scale, fluid clamp() typography, modern grid and flex layout, container-aware aspect-ratio media, and respects the prefers-reduced-motion system preference. No bundler, no build step.

Photography

Most photographs in the web edition are placeholder seeds from Picsum Photos (Lorem Picsum), keyed to topical seed strings so that any given photograph stays stable across page loads and reissues. Replacement photography (Lucia Brae's 4x5 Linhof negatives, scanned at the shop on a CrystalScan 4500) is substituted in the print edition.

Accessibility

This site is designed to WCAG 2.1 AA standards on body text contrast (4.5:1), with focus-visible styling distinct from default focus, keyboard navigation throughout, semantic HTML landmarks (header, nav, main, article, aside, footer) on every page, real button and a elements (no div onclick), labeled form fields with autocomplete and inputmode hints, a skip-to-content link as the first focusable element on every page, and prefers-reduced-motion respect on every motion gesture. Accessibility issues should be reported to the editor; we read every report and respond within a week.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Workers Static Assets and served from Cloudflare's global edge. The source files live in a pnpm-managed workspace alongside other demonstration sites; the build pipeline is "no build step" — the directory of static files is what ships. Deploys are managed with wrangler 4.
