A Spectra Newport 400C for a charter sloop

A Hinckley B40 chartered through Salish Sea Yacht Charters out of Port Townsend picks up the most-asked-for upgrade of the 2026 season — and, with it, the schedule headache of bi-annual membrane pickling.

The Hinckley B40 (Bermuda 40) is the boat that, in the 1980s, defined the American chartering classic — a 40-foot Sparkman & Stephens-designed, cold-molded mahogany sloop built at the Hinckley yard in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Orcas Lullaby, hull number 132, was built in 1986 and lived on the East Coast until 2017, when her present owner — who runs a small charter operation out of Port Townsend, Salish Sea Yacht Charters, with three boats on the line — bought her out of an Annapolis estate and trucked her west on a Wallenius Wilhelmsen RoRo through the Panama Canal.

She has been chartering out of Port Townsend since the 2018 season. Her usual charter week is a one-week skippered or bareboat charter into the San Juan Islands, with the typical track running through Cattle Pass into Friday Harbor, then Stuart Island, Sucia, Patos, Matia, Echo Bay, and back through the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Boat Haven. Her tankage is 80 gallons of fresh water in two original 40-gallon polyethylene tanks. Charter parties of four use, on average, 18–24 gallons of fresh water per day; a full week of charter therefore averages 140 gallons of consumption against 80 gallons of capacity, with the difference made up by topping off at the Friday Harbor public dock or at the Sucia Park float — each of which costs the charter party a $5–10 topoff fee and twenty minutes of dock time.

The owner has watched this overhead accumulate for eight seasons. He has also watched, over the same period, the per-charter-week pricing of the upgrade ladder rise to the point that — for the 2026 season — Salish Sea Yacht Charters is offering a "freshwater-independent" charter tier for an extra $200 per week. The owner needs to deliver freshwater independence on at least one of his three boats to justify the tier. Orcas Lullaby is the boat he picked.

Why the Spectra Newport 400C

The Spectra Newport 400C is the workhorse of the Spectra line — a 15-GPH unit running at approximately 12 amps at 12 V, with the patented Spectra Pearson Pump providing energy recovery and the Connect-V remote-monitor head providing what is, in 2025–2026, the best touchscreen monitoring interface on the market.1 For a 40-foot cruising sailboat with a 400 Ah lithium house bank (which Orcas Lullaby has, as of her 2023 electrical refit), 15 GPH at 12 amps closes the math at one hour of runtime per day for four people at conservative use. The bank is rated to recover that draw within a half-day of solar (the boat carries 600 watts on the dodger and bimini). The math, in short, closes well.

The alternative we considered was the Spectra Cape Horn Extreme 380E — a similar 15-GPH output, but with the older Clark pump and the older mechanical control head. The Newport 400C costs about $1,200 more than the Cape Horn at the time of this writing, and the difference is overwhelmingly in the monitoring head. For a chartering vessel — where the operator of the boat is not the owner, and where the operator needs to be able to look at a screen and understand what the system is doing — the Connect-V head is worth every cent.

What we installed

The watermaker went into the port lazarette, on a fabricated 3/16" Coosa-board mounting plate bonded to the lazarette sole with West System G/Flex. The Pearson Pump, the high-pressure pump, and the boost pump are stacked vertically on the lazarette inboard bulkhead. The membrane housing — a single 40" Filmtec SW30-2540 element — runs athwartship along the lazarette outboard wall. The pre-filter (a 20-micron clear-bowl unit) sits in the engine room. The Connect-V head went into the navigation station, in a flush-mount in the chart table, where the charter operator briefs every party at handover.

The raw-water intake is a new bronze through-hull on the port quarter, with a Marelon ball valve and a Trident strum-box strainer. The brine discharge runs to a new through-hull on the starboard quarter, above the waterline at heel. The product-water line runs forward through the engine room to a new manifold tee on the freshwater system. The owner specified — and we agreed — that the product water would enter the existing port-side 40-gallon tank, leaving the starboard tank as a "always-known-good" reserve. The two tanks are isolated at the supply manifold with a manual selector valve.

The pickling schedule

A reverse-osmosis watermaker that is not run for more than seven days will, in marine water, develop biological fouling on the membrane. The fouling reduces output, shortens membrane life, and at high enough levels makes the product water unsafe to drink. The mitigation is "pickling" — flushing the membrane with a propylene-glycol-and-sodium-metabisulfite solution that stops biological activity for up to six months.2

For a private cruising boat, pickling is an annual event done at the end of the season. For a charter boat that runs eighteen one-week charters between April and October, pickling is more complex. The boat will be in service for one week, then between charters for two to four days, then in service again. The two-to-four-day gap is below the seven-day fouling threshold; the eight-to-twelve-day gap that opens up in the shoulder seasons (October to May) is well above it.

What we worked out with the owner is a two-pickling-per-season schedule, set at the start (April) and the end (October) of the charter season. Between charters during the season, the watermaker will be run for a thirty-minute polish-cycle by the dockside operator after every charter — long enough to flush the membrane with fresh product water and keep the biological-fouling clock reset. The owner has, as part of this refit, hired the apprentice (Lucia) to do the post-charter polish-cycle through the season; this is the kind of standing labor contract the shop occasionally takes.

Commissioning

The unit was commissioned at the dock on the morning of Friday 13 March, with the boat in her slip and the dockside freshwater shore connection providing the initial flush. The Pearson Pump came online at 0910 and produced its first 60 liters of fresh water in 4 minutes 12 seconds against a Spectra spec ceiling of 4 minutes 30. Product-water specific conductivity at 68°F came in at 184 µS/cm against a Spectra ceiling of 500 µS/cm — well in spec, comparable to the Schenker Modular 30 we commissioned on Greta the same week (218 µS/cm), and consistent with what we have measured on every Spectra install of this scale.

The Connect-V head logged the commissioning run automatically; the owner now has a baseline against which to compare every future run. The shop has a copy of the same log in the install report.

The aside

I have installed twenty-seven watermakers on this coast since 2017 — fourteen of them Spectras, six Schenkers, four Sea Recovery Aquamatics, two Katadyn Power Survivors, and one Village Marine. The single most important thing I have learned in those twenty-seven installs is that the choice of unit matters less than the operator's discipline about running the unit. A poorly-disciplined operator with a top-end Spectra will get less life out of his membrane than a disciplined operator with a budget Katadyn. The post-charter polish-cycle on Orcas Lullaby exists because the owner is honest about his own discipline — he has a charter operator and a turnover crew, not himself, doing the actual polishing. The shop's role, increasingly, is to install systems whose operating discipline can be enforced by paperwork rather than by trust. — B.H., 12 March 2026.

What it cost

The full refit invoiced at $11,640 plus tax: $8,920 for the Spectra Newport 400C with Connect-V head and accessories; $480 for the two new bronze through-hulls and Marelon valves; $310 for the Coosa-board mounting plate, the bonding hardware, and the West System materials; $190 for the manifold selector valve and miscellaneous freshwater plumbing fittings; and $1,740 in labor across 14 working days. The Port's haul-and-launch tariff was $560 (18-day yard slot at the discounted late-winter rate). The owner separately negotiated a standing labor agreement with the apprentice for the season's polish-cycle work, billed monthly.

Returned to the water

We launched Orcas Lullaby at 1430 on Thursday 12 March 2026, into the slack-water window of a 4-knot ebb. Her first charter of the 2026 season — a four-day Spring Break charter with a party of three out of Port Townsend to Friday Harbor and back — departs the Boat Haven on the morning of Saturday 21 March, with the watermaker tier sold at the new $200 premium. The owner has six other charters booked at the same tier for the year. The unit is expected to return its installation cost, on the season-pricing math, in approximately two and a half seasons.
